Team Green Britain has joined forces with Bike Week, the biggest cycling event in the UK, to create Team Green Britain Bike Week 2010.

Running from 19-27 June, Team Green Britain Bike Week aims to show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life. It’s a great opportunity to promote cycling as an everyday, healthy and practical lifestyle choice that can help the planet too.

By working together, we aim to make this year’s Team Green Britain Bike Week the biggest yet – encouraging half a million people to join in events, rethink their everyday journeys and switch to cycling as the most convenient way to get around.

Already Team Green Britain’s support has made a difference, enabling the funding of 13 workshops for event organisers, as well as new event organiser guides. Plus, in a new feature for 2010, Team Green Britain event sustainability consultant and professional ironman triathlete, Toby Radcliffe, will provide expert advice on how to minimise the environmental impact of your Bike Week event.

To find out how you could get involved today, visit bikeweek.org.uk

Eleanor Simmonds, winner of two paralympic swimming gold medals, met children from Liskeard’s Upton Cross Primary School at the Eden Project to celebrate Green Britain Day.
With the help of local artist Tom Barnecut (and a lot of giggling), they created a giant recycled tree on which they hung their green pledges and ‘footprints’.

The excited pupils gave the visitors a tour of their special wildlife area. Then they showed them the photovoltaic solar panels, from which the school generates its own electricity.

After that, most of the time was spent in the school garden, helping the children plant seeds and compost fruit. They also recycled paper and made models out of recycled material.

The Eden Session saw Weller play some of his most famous hits, while Florence charmed the crowd with tracks from her debut album ‘Lungs’.

They were almost upstaged by the famous biomes of Eden, which had been turned green for the day. A giant green Union Jack was also projected on to the surrounding countryside, to create a stunning and fitting finale to one amazing day.

Green Britain Day saw the staff of EDF Energy do their bit for Team Green Britain.

At all of their sites in the UK, with over 155 events, employees did loads of fun and practical things to both make their lives, and the business, even greener.

So, in addition to Swap Shops and Big Lunches, people have been car-sharing on their way into work, or even better walking or taking the train. Loads of people dressed tip to toe in green – and we had a few Kermits join us for the day too.

People have also gone out into their local communities, helping at Heart FM summer fetes, cleaning beaches, litter picking and even doing a spot of gardening as well.

On Green Britain Day, Heart FM and Real Radio listeners turned out in their thousands to do something green for the team, at specially organised summer fetes.

Up and down the country, people came along and started doing their bit to live greener lives. At Swap Shops, forgotten items were given a new lease of life by their new owners, bikes were inspected and made ready to ride, and there was a lot of recycling too, as newspapers got turned into hats, collages and other pieces of origami art. People also found out how and where to buy local produce, and got loads of advice on how they can start shrinking their carbon footprint.
